Judith Klein-Seetharaman’s laboratory addresses questions related to membrane receptors from a molecular and structural perspective using a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology and computational biology. The group specifically interested in proteins with function in retinal degeneration, such as the G protein coupled receptors rhodopsin, the visual pigment in the eye, and metabotropic glutamate receptor type 6 and glutamic acid rich proteins (GARP’s), highly negatively charged retina-specific proteins with likely Calcium-buffering function. As a fundamental research laboratory, this research in rhodopsin leads to development of methodology or hypotheses that has impact for the study of other protein machines.
